There's a group of hamburger restaurants in the Santa Barbara (CA) area started by a couple of brothers back in the 60's - and despite having a few more than your stated limit, I wouldn't really call these guys a "chain." And even if they are - the burgers and fries are TOO good to pass up. The 1/4 pound patties are flame grilled and served with grilled onions by request. The buns are toasted and tasty. The cheese is quite generous and the food is always HOT - very few burger joints bring the food out while it's still too hot to eat. In addition to the great food - these folks have an amazing staff training program. Either that or they've hired the best workers on the planet by accident. No matter which of their places you visit, the folks are friendly, upbeat, fast. It's a pleasure to eat there. There are HABIT locations all along the coast from about Thousand Oaks, Camarillo, Ventura and Santa Barbara. Their original store is still open near UCSB.
